Lux
Lux – the Latin for “light” – brings hope; it banishes darkness; it nurtures both the body and the spirit — it has inspired composers from the earliest times until the present day.
As this luminous selection of pieces demonstrates, there are few more inspiring means of representing the power of light in all its physical, spiritual and mystical guises, than by the ethereal sound of human voices blended into a choir.
These works span over 400 years: from Thomas Tallis and Gregorio Allegri to Massive Attack (Teardrop) and Ben Folds (The Luckiest – which appeared on the soundtrack for Richard Curtis’s film About Time).
Includes popular classics such as Allegri’s Miserere and Elgar’s Nimrod. Paul Mealor’s Ubi Caritas, commissioned by Prince William, was sung at the Prince’s wedding to Catherine Middleton in 2011. Features pieces by two of the most talked about composers of our time: Norway’s Ola Gjeilo and Will Todd.
There is something inherently comforting about the sound of unaccompanied voices blended in harmony. The otherworldly addition of saxophone, cello, harp and water glasses add another dimension to the pieces on which they appear.
