Hailed ‘the most celebrated live album of it’s generation’ it has gone on to be acclaimed as the greatest live album of all time and, in turn, elevated The Who’s legacy as one of the greatest live bands. LIVE AT LEEDS is ranked by Rolling Stone in their ‘500 Greatest Albums Of All Time’ and also included in Q magazine’s list of ‘Loudest Albums of All Time’ with The New York Times acclaiming it as ‘The Best Live Rock Album Ever Made’.BUT two shows were scheduled in 1970, one in Leeds on February 14 and the other in Hull on February 15, for the purpose of recording and releasing a live album and compiling the best bits from both gigs. Regardless of great approval of the Leeds gig by many fans and critics, the band members believed the recordings at Hull sounded even better, as the acoustics projected better in the spacious venue.But there were technical problems with the recordings from the Hull gig – the bass guitar had not been recorded on some of the songs – and hence the whole show from the 14th to be released as the album. That’s at least what has been believed until 2010, when by chance, a fellow associate of the band went back to the vaults and listened to the recordings from Hull again and discovered that the whole set recorded on a mobile unit was there, capturing both band and audience! …meaning that one of the greatest live album in rock history came about by mistake because as the band thought it was not complete!The Who – Live At Hull is a 2CD version of the Hull concert previously only available released on the ‘Live at Leeds’ Super-deluxe box set 2010. The audio is remastered and remixed material from Hull City Hall 15th February 1970.
