FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO
Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) moved to a remote cabin in the woods of northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. He also made this remarkably beautiful record. BON IVER (French for “good winter” and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. The record was created entirely by Vernon with nothing more than a few microphones and some aged recording equipment. The end result being ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ a nine-song album and an unassumingly beautiful masterpiece. Originally self released by Vernon himself, the 500 copies he pressed up disappeared very quickly and caught the immediate attention of fellow musicians, record labels and critics around the world.
