Album facts:
After the breakup of Generation X and the release of his first solo EP Don’t Stop in 1981, Billy Idol began working on his self-titled debut. Originally released on July 16, 1982 and produced by Keith Forsey, the rock album with punk roots contained strong influences of new wave music. It was a commercial breakthrough success, peaking at number forty-five on the Billboard 200/fifteen on the US Rock Albums chart and is certified Gold by the RIAA.
The lead single, “Hot In The City,” peaked at number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100. “White Wedding” was released as the album’s second single. It peaked at number three on the Mainstream Rock chart and number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying music video, featuring Billy Idol attending a goth wedding, was an early MTV staple hit video and established Billy as a household name, it continues to be one of Billy’s best known songs, his top streaming track and the song that closes Billy’s live shows to this day.
