Shine On (Limited Edition Yellow Vinyl)
Songwriter Steve Poltz releases his Red House Records debut, ‘Shine On.’
Capturing the whimsy, clever wordplay, wry humor and oddball true-life adventures that have made Poltz a live draw and a cult hero, ‘Shine On’ was recorded in Nashville with producer Will Kimbrough and features guests Molly Tuttle and Anthony Da Costa. No Depression writes: “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit, Poltz has suggested at times a sunnier, less psychedelic Todd Snider, or maybe a less wan, washed Jackson Brown.”
The album’s first single, “Ballin’ on a Wednesday,” is an ode to livin’ large on hump day and was described as a “scratchy barn burner with a Drive-By Truckers and Steve Earle edginess making for a Nashville old-timey rock workout” (Glide Magazine). Elsewhere on the album, Poltz imagines a conversation between windows, writes about a guy who has a crush on his pharmacist, and delivers a wry take on the classic country-music cliche of songs about pick-up trucks with the aptly titled “The Pick-Up Song.”
A Canadian by birth and a San Diego resident for most of his career, Poltz made the move to Nashville, TN, and quickly found a circle of like-minded musical friends. Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” the record represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful.
