Put Your Needle Down
The Secret Sisters are an American country/folk duo, consisting of vocalists Laura and Lidia Rogers. Their second full-length album, ‘Put Your Needle Down’ was produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, the man their self-titled debut album and records by Roy Orbison, Lisa Marie Presley, Counting Crows, Elton John, Tony Bennett and numerous other iconic artists.
‘Put Your Needle Down’ is symbolic of many different things,” affirms Lydia. “There’s a rebirth of the vinyl trend going on, but it really represents the fact that we’re not little girls anymore. We want to put the needle down. Our mom isn’t still sewing our clothes. We’re doing our own thing.”
Recording the album led to a surreal experience for The Secret Sisters, who were offered to finish a song that Bob Dylan first started writing back in the mid-Eighties. “We were in the middle of our recording session with T Bone and he said to us, ‘Bob sent over some songs for you guys to listen to and choose one to finish,'” Laura recalls. “We looked at four or five demos he’d sent and ‘Dirty Lie’ really spoke to us.”
“It’s slightly terrifying when people say, ‘I don’t know how to categorise The Secret Sisters. What genre are you?'” Lydia admits. “You need to be categorised to find radio success, but we’re not too concerned with radio. If you can’t categorise your music, then you’re not doing what’s trendy and you’re not following a formula. So if you’re not categorised, there’s a good chance you’re doing something special.”
