Ex Tropical is the debut album by Jarrod Quarrell AKA Lost Animal. Ex Tropical (the title inspired by a period spent in the tropics as a child) was written during the life of Quarrell’s last project, St Helens, and after the band ceased to be in early 2010. On his own admission, Ex Tropical is Jarrod’s most successful musical project to date and it shows: the album exhibiting a deft sense of vocal prowess and an irrefutable songwriting quality. ‘Ex Tropical’ exudes everything that makes for a great album; heart, soul, flesh and blood, sensuality and reflection. Musically there’s resonance, groove and groan. Comparative names such as Berlinperiod Bowie, ’80s Leonard Cohen, Rowland S. Howard, Joy Division and more could be thrown around, but merely throwing around such names doesn’t capture its beauty. great set of songs that we should all get enthused, it’s that aesthetically Ex Tropical is a meld of warm, memorable melting moments, moderated by both vibrant tones and subtle nuances, including the use of keys, marimba, brass, xylophone and percussion.
